There are a lot of scams out there for dSLR's on ebay. You want to be careful, and any western union or money wires are a red flag. If you are going to get a new camera I would go with a reputable company with USA warranty's and return policy's. Calumet is a great source, because they have a large store in Escondido, and you can go and shop in person and leave with your new camera the same day. Several of their employees are photographers also, and they can give you practical advice. There are other online retailers, like B&H Photo that I have used and have never had any issues with them. If the deal looks too good to be true - that's because it is. It's too big of an investment to skimp on. As for buying used, you want to be able to see the camera in person, test it out. Bring someone camera smarts with you to help you evaluate the condition of the camera.
Don't forget about lenses!!! A photographer's bag will be heavily more invested with lenses than bodies. It totally depends on what type of shooting you want to do as to what lenses you will want. A good starter lens is the nifty fifty. It's just under $100 for a 50mm prime 1.8 It doesn't have any bells and whistles, but it's a fast lens with a 1.8 f-stop, and very sharp - as most primes are.
If you have a certain budget and an idea of the type of shooting you'd like to do, I can give you some more recomendations on bodies and lenses.
