best place to buy a camera

where is the best place to buy a new camera? The Ritz camera shop has closed. Is Best Buy a good place? Is online safe? I am looking for a replacement 35mm film with digital.

Don:

I'm back in the studio from Italy and wish I was still there! On your camera shopping question; over the years I found it best to actually talk one-to-one with a professional salesperson that has a good knowledge and grasp of the technology but more importantly your particular needs. For sure you can purchase over the internet if you know exactly what you want. We do that all the time. But if you want the advice from a professional you need to visit a good camera store. Unfortunately there very few left as most have gone to the online business model to compete. Here in the Temecula Valley we are lucky to have one of the nation's largest photography equipment camera stores available up the road in Escondido with Calumet Photo. They are located off of Valley Parkway. For online purchasing I would stick with Calumet and B&H. Both offer very good service and our parts have always arrived on time. Let me know if this helps.

Well, we should start with what to buy, before we decide where to buy. The Ritz sales team never impressed me, so I wouldn't worry that they have closed. The sales team at Calumet knows way more about the camera's and products and can give you much better advice if you would like to purchase in person. There are several online dealers that you can order from once you know what you are buying. Just stick with the major well-reputable companies. B&H, Ritz, Amazon to start. If you find the price way lower somewhere else, that's a red flag.

When purchasing a camera, also look at the lenses, flashes, etc. Each brand carries it's own line of accessories, and you want to pick a line up that will suit your needs now and in the future.

Hello Don:

I'm in Florence Italy and the Tuscany Valley this week. I promise to get back to you soon with a detailed answer. For now look up Calumet and B&H on the web. More later..
