Happy Birthday to me!

My husband has just surprised me with my birthday present- a class on Nov 21st with DP School of Photography! I am extremely excited! I have a few questions I was hoping you could answer for me....

1. If I am looking for clarity in pictures will I achieve better results with prime or a zoom lens? I shoot mostly outside portraiture. I shoot canon xsi with a 24-105 L. It has been a good combination but I am not always pleased with the clarity.

2. You mentioned you will split us up into different instructors depending on what we want to focus on. Can you give me some insight as to what are the some of the major topics taught- so I can decided before hand where I want to benefit the most?

3. As I am new to this area, I have not found any photo labs yet for prints, do you have any ideas?

Meagan:

It's not a "cop-out" but it truly depends on what you plan on doing with your camera gear. As a casual shooter your camera body is fine and I would expand into better glass like the 70-200 2.8. I love that lens. And IS is worth the extra $$. That said if you are getting serious and maybe want to play in the high-end portraiture business then moving up to a 5D will open new functionality and possibilities. If you prefer sports and action images then the new 7D or 1D bodies have the super fast focusing that will meet those needs. Keep in your budget! The one nice thing about lens purchases is they can move from camera body to camera body and for the most part have a very long and useful life. That is the way it used to be with camera bodies but the digital world has changed that a lot. Fantastic new features and capabilities every year and the older bodies seem less valuable. Not with lenses.

We can talk more in the workshop.

Thanks for the response. I'm sure we can talk about a lot of these things at the class, but for me to be thinking about in the mean time - my next step in equipment will either be a nicer camera (50D,7D,5D MK1 etc) or 70-200 L f2.8. What would be your recommendation? Camera or Lens? Also is the IS worth spending the extra money on in the 70-200? Thanks for having this forum, it is very helpful as I am learning about the industry.

Your camera and lens setup are fine. Actually better than fine with the 24-105 L f4 lens. Clarity in an image depends on lots of factors include proper lighting techniques, camera setup, and post processing options. Contrast and brightness will play an important part along with sharpness. We will discuss all these elements during the class both in the general sessions and in the breakout sessions.

As far as what breakout session will meet your needs - I would suggest the outdoors portrait session with Liba. Also you will have the opportunity swap sessions mid way through at our first break if you wish.

Hope this helps!
